Getting started
What do I need to run Rooteen?+
An iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later. Rooteen itself is free. Rooteen Family (the parent app) is a separate free download — you only need it if you want the parent-side features.
How long does setup take?+
About two minutes. The first launch asks for a display name, picks an avatar, and suggests five starter tasks across the five categories — you can skip any of those and add your own later.
How do I pair the parent app with the kid app?+
In the kid app, open Settings → Parent. A six-digit code appears. Open Rooteen Family on your phone, tap Link, type the code. Done in under ten seconds. The code changes after pairing, so it can't be reused.
Can my kid use Rooteen without a parent device?+
Yes. Rooteen runs fully on its own — the parent app is optional. If there's no linked parent, tasks auto-approve, streaks advance, and XP accrues normally.
What if I reinstall the app — do I lose everything?+
No. If you were signed into iCloud when the profile was created, it's restored automatically on reinstall. The Welcome screen also has an "I already have a profile" button that triggers the restore manually.
For parents
Can I monitor my kid without them knowing?+
No, and by design. Rooteen isn't a surveillance tool. Your kid sees that a parent is linked (there's a badge in their settings). You see their progress, not their private usage.
How does the approval workflow work?+
Per-task toggle. If approval is on, completing the task marks it "awaiting review" and fires a push to the parent app — you tap ✓ or ✗. If approval is off, the task auto-completes and XP drops immediately.
What are Family Challenges?+
A time-boxed mini-goal you create from the parent app — e.g., "First to 100 XP by Sunday." Siblings compete across their own paired devices. Winner gets a bonus badge. Available on Pro with 2+ linked kids.
Can I add custom tasks?+
Yes, from Rooteen Family → a kid's dashboard → Add Task. Title, category, optional target duration, optional icon. Pro feature.
What's the widget for?+
Both apps ship Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets. The kid widget shows daily progress + streak at a glance. The parent widget shows how many tasks are pending approval across linked kids.
Can I send a badge to my kid?+
Yes — from any child's dashboard in Rooteen Family, tap the Send Badge button. Pick an icon, write a short message, hit send. It arrives as a celebration overlay in the kid app. Pro feature.
How do I handle multiple kids on one iPad?+
Not supported today. Rooteen runs one profile per device — that's intentional, so each kid has their own identity and XP doesn't collapse into one score. If your kids share an iPad, the cleaner option is to give each one their own login on the iPad via Apple's multi-user setup.
What does the weekly digest include?+
Tasks completed, streak status, XP earned, best day of the week, and any badges unlocked. Arrives on Sunday evening as a push, quiet but useful. Pro feature.
For kids
What's XP?+
Experience points. Every task you complete gives you some — small tasks (like making the bed) give less, bigger ones (like homework) give more. XP fills your level bar.
How do I level up?+
Just keep tapping tasks. Each level needs more XP than the last one. Leveling up unlocks new avatars and badges.
What's a streak?+
The number of days in a row you've completed at least one task. Miss a day, it resets. There's a one-day grace per week, so you can miss once without losing everything — but only once.
Can I change my avatar?+
Yes, anytime. Tap your avatar in the top-right → pick a new one from the grid. Some avatars are locked until you reach a certain level or earn a specific badge.
Privacy & safety
Does Rooteen track location?+
No. Never. Not foreground, not background, not once. There is no location code in the app.
Does Rooteen see my kid's messages, browsing, or app usage?+
No. Rooteen only reads and writes its own data — tasks, XP, streaks, badges, the avatar they picked. It has no entitlement to anything else on the phone.
Where is my family's data stored?+
In your own iCloud account, using Apple's CloudKit private database. We do not run servers that hold your data. The only cross-device sync is Apple's encrypted CloudKit pipe.
Is Rooteen COPPA-compliant?+
Yes. No ads, no third-party trackers, no social features, no personally identifiable information collected beyond a display name you choose. Data is stored locally + in your iCloud — we don't see it.
How do I delete all of my family's data?+
In the kid app: Settings → Delete All Data. This wipes the local store AND purges the CloudKit private zone for this account. In the parent app: Settings → Delete All Data does the same for the parent-side records. You can also delete the app from the Home Screen; iCloud records stay until you run Delete All Data, then they're gone.
Can I use Rooteen anonymously?+
Yes. The display name is anything you pick — there's no email, phone, or real name requirement. Leaderboards are opt-in and anonymized to a display name only.
Troubleshooting
The parent app isn't showing updated tasks.+
Force-refresh with pull-to-refresh on the dashboard. If still stale, make sure both apps are signed into the same iCloud account and have network connectivity. Sync is CloudKit-driven — it typically takes 5–30 seconds after a change.
My kid's badge didn't arrive.+
Parent-sent badges deliver via CloudKit push — usually within a minute. Check that the kid has notifications enabled for Rooteen (Settings → Rooteen → Notifications). Also verify you picked the right kid in the send-badge sheet; badges are scoped per child.
The streak reset when I didn't miss a day.+
The streak checks based on calendar day in the kid's time zone. Time-zone changes or crossing midnight mid-task can look like a reset. Most commonly, though, no task was completed before midnight — the grace day absorbs the first miss but subsequent ones reset. If you're sure tasks were done and the streak broke anyway, email hello@getrooteen.com and we'll look at the logs you send.
The app crashed after I unlocked a badge.+
Very rare but we want the crash log. Send a screenshot + what you were doing to hello@getrooteen.com. iOS also writes a crash report automatically — if you've opted into sharing analytics with developers, we'll see it on our end.
I forgot my iCloud password — will I lose data?+
Not if you recover the iCloud account. Your Rooteen data lives in your iCloud private database, not tied to any Rooteen login (we don't have logins). Resetting the iCloud password preserves the data.
