The short version

Rooteen (the kids app) and Rooteen Family (the parent app) are published by Patry, a Québec-based solo company. We built both apps to be private by default: no ads, no third-party analytics, no servers of ours storing your family's data.

Everything the app creates — tasks, XP, streaks, badges, your avatar, your child's progress — lives in your own iCloud account via Apple's CloudKit private database. We do not have access to it. You can delete it anytime from the app's settings.

What we collect

Only what the app needs to work. That's: a display name you pick (first name or nickname), the tasks you create or pick from our catalog, the completion record of those tasks, your XP/level/streak/badges, your selected avatar, and — on the parent side — the six-digit pairing code that links a parent device to a child device.

We do not collect: your real name, your email (we don't have logins), your phone number, your location, your browsing history, your other apps' data, your device identifiers beyond Apple's standard CloudKit user record, your photos, your contacts, or your messages.

Where your data lives

In two places, both under your control:

1) On your device, in a local SwiftData store inside the app's sandbox. This is what makes the app work offline.

2) In your iCloud account, mirrored by Apple's CloudKit private database. CloudKit is encrypted at rest and in transit, tied to your Apple ID, and accessible only by you and the devices you've signed in.

Neither Patry nor any third party has access to the CloudKit private database. We cannot read your data even if we wanted to.

Sharing with third parties

We do not share your family's data with anyone. Full stop.

We do not sell data. We do not use advertising networks. We do not embed third-party SDKs that phone home. We do not run analytics on your usage.

The only data transmitted outside your device is: CloudKit traffic (your data, between your iCloud account and Apple's servers), and App Store purchase receipts (handled entirely by Apple when you subscribe to Rooteen Family Pro).

Children's privacy (COPPA, GDPR-K)

Rooteen is designed for kids ages 8 to 13. We take that seriously.

We comply with COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, U.S.) and the children's provisions of GDPR (European Union). We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children beyond a display name that a parent or the child chooses, which can be anything (e.g. a nickname, an emoji, "Dragon Kid").

Leaderboards — a feature that shows anonymized rankings across Rooteen users — are opt-in by default, off by default, and can be permanently disabled by a parent from Rooteen Family.

Parents can access and delete all of their child's Rooteen data at any time from the app settings. No email, no phone call, no bureaucratic process — just tap Delete All Data.

Your rights

Because we don't hold your data, most data-rights requests resolve locally: you access your data by opening the app, you correct it by editing, you delete it by tapping Delete All Data in Settings.

If you still want to reach us — for instance to confirm in writing that we don't hold data tied to your household — email hello@getrooteen.com and we'll respond within 14 days.

Residents of Québec and the European Union: you have the right to lodge a complaint with your data-protection authority if you believe we've mishandled your data. Given our architecture (iCloud-only), we expect this never to come up — but the right is yours.

Notifications

Both apps request permission to send notifications (task reminders for the kid, approval queue + surprise-badge acknowledgments for the parent). Notification permission is optional — the app works fully without it. You can revoke it anytime in iOS Settings → Rooteen → Notifications.

Notification payloads are routed by Apple Push Notification service. We do not store notification content on our servers.

Subscriptions

Rooteen Family Pro ($4.99/month, $39.99/year, or $89.99 lifetime) is a standard App Store subscription handled entirely by Apple. We do not see your credit-card number, billing address, or Apple ID. We only see whether your device has an active Pro subscription so we can unlock the relevant features.

Cancellation and refunds happen through Apple's standard flow (Settings → your Apple ID → Subscriptions). See our Terms of Service for subscription details, or Apple's refund page for refund requests.

Changes to this policy

If we change how the app handles data, we will update this page with a new "Last updated" date and — if the change is material — post a notice inside the app the next time you open it.

Changes will never apply retroactively to data that predates the update.
